Planning your trip to La Fortuna and worried that the hikes might be too demanding? Don’t worry! While the Arenal Volcano area is famous for its wild nature, it also offers trails perfectly suited for every fitness level.
As a certified local guide with over 10 years of experience walking these paths, I often get asked how to best explore the area without ending up exhausted. The secret isn’t about difficulty—it’s about choosing the right trail to truly connect with nature
Here are my top 3 recommendations for those who want to enjoy the experience without technical complications:
1. Arenal Volcano National Park Trails (“Las Coladas” Sector)
This is the quintessential classic hike. If you’re coming to La Fortuna, you simply have to see the volcano up close.
- Why it’s ideal: The trail is mostly flat, well-marked, and offers spectacular views of the volcano’s majestic, iconic shape and the ancient lava fields.
- The special touch: It’s a natural history walk. Walking over the solidified lava from 1968 makes you feel small in the face of Arenal’s sheer magnitude.
- Guide tip: Take it easy. There isn’t much shade on this route, so head out early in the morning or a little before sunset to avoid the intense midday heat.
2. La Fortuna Waterfall
An icon of the area. It is a short hike, but with a small, rewarding “challenge.”
- Why it’s ideal: The trail is very well-maintained with steps. While the descent (and ascent) requires a bit of physical effort, it is a controlled and safe path.
- The special touch: The final reward: swimming in the crystal-clear, refreshing waters of the waterfall. It’s the perfect moment for incredible photos.
- Guide tip: The climb back up is slower than the walk down. Take your time, enjoy the tropical rainforest surrounding you, and make stops to stay hydrated. It’s not a race!
3. Hanging Bridges (Místico Park)
If you want to see the rainforest from a different perspective, this is your best option.
- Why it’s ideal: Walking on the hanging bridges allows you to be right in the treetops, where most of the wildlife lives, without the need for any climbing. The terrain is gentle, making it feel more like a contemplative stroll.
- The special touch: The opportunity to spot sloths, toucans, and monkeys from a privileged vantage point. It’s truly like walking above the forest.
- Guide tip: Take this tour with an expert guide. Spotting animals in the forest canopy is difficult if you don’t know where to look; a local guide knows the habits of the wildlife and will help you see things that go unnoticed to the naked eye.
