Arenal hot springs
Volcanic Thermal Waters

The Arenal hot springs experience is one of the most distinctly Costa Rican things you can do. You soak in geothermally heated pools at the foot of a live volcano. Tropical forest surrounds you on all sides. The day’s tension dissolves in water that has traveled up from the earth’s interior. This is not a spa. It is something older, and considerably more satisfying.

The Thermal Pools at Arenal: What to Expect

The thermal pools at Arenal include vortex-type hydromassage pools designed to target the mid-back and calves. In addition, there is a cold-water pool for contrast therapy, submerged reclining beds, waterfall features, and a beach-style entrance area. Each section offers something different.

Guests typically arrive around 11:00 AM and have approximately 5 hours to move between pools, rest, eat, and soak again at leisure. The progression most guests follow: start in the warmest vortex pool, then move to the main thermal pools as your body acclimatizes. Next, use the waterfall for shoulder pressure and briefly cool down in the cold pool. After dinner, furthermore, the pools under the stars have a quality the afternoon light simply cannot match. There is no rush to this experience – that is the entire point.

Towels and lockers are available for rental at the facility – ask about rates when you book. In short, come in your swimsuit and bring as little else as you need.
